Types of Depression

There are several types of depression, each with an underlying theme of prolonged sadness, feelings of guilt, loss of interest in daily activities, and other common symptoms. Here, we outline just a few.

Major Depressive Disorder

Major Depressive Disorder is most frequently characterized by one or more disruptive behaviors and thought patterns, including suicidal ideation, loss of interest in things that normally bring joy, unexplained weight fluctuations, trouble sleeping, sluggishness or restlessness, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, and difficulty focusing.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

Persistent Depressive Disorder describes depression symptoms that last for two years or more. This diagnosis can cover both chronic major depression or low-grade persistent depression.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Also known as Seasonal Mood Disorder, this is a very common classification of depression in the United States. It most frequently occurs in the winter, when the days are short and your exposure to sunlight is limited. Less commonly, it can happen in the spring and summer as well. These depressive disorders will usually have an onset in the fall and lift during the spring as the weather warms and the days get longer. For some, it’s more than the winter blues. Seasonal Affective Disorder can have a devastating effect on you, impacting your activities and relationships, but it can be treated with light therapy and antidepressants.

There are several more types of depression, including Situational Depression (also known as Adjustment Disorder), which follows a loss, divorce, or other stressful situation, and Atypical Depression, which can be temporarily improved by a positive occurrence.
